Last week when Apple launched the new iPad Pro 9.7-inch model , it became quite clear that Apple's new tablet was actually better than the larger model which was launched alongside the iPhone 6S. However, that's changing because tech website Ars Technica which is one of the first sites to review the new iPad Pro has revealed that the smaller tablet is actually trotting 2GB lesser RAM than larger 12.9-inch model, which can cause a major difference in performance, that too, negatively.
Apple usually doesn't dive deep into technical specifications and it never releases the figures on the amount of RAM its iOS devices have. While Apple upgraded the camera on the iPad Pro and outfitted it with the same imaging gear as the iPhone 6S, it actually downgraded the processing chops of the device.
The review has revealed that the iPad Pro 9.7-inch not only has 2GB lesser RAM than the 12.9-inch model, but its processor also has a lower clock speed of 2.15GHz. The overall effect is that in some memory intensive benchmarks like the GFXBench, the performance of the iPad Pro 9.7-inch is about 25 per cent lesser than the larger model which Apple released. In fact, the performance of the tablet isn't significantly faster than the iPad Air 2 because that has a 3-core processor while the A9X SoC on the iPad Pro 9.7-inch is a dual-core chip.
Another area where the iPad Pro 9.7-inch lags behind the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro is in the area of data transfer speeds. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is capable of USB 3.0 speeds while the smaller one is still straddled on USB 2.0 speeds. Even to incorporate the 12-megapixel camera from the iPhone 6S, Apple had to make design compromises like the minor camera bump which sticks out the symmetrical iPad Pro rear.
Apple isn't even using the same resolution as the iPad Pro 12.9-inch. The 9.7-inch model gets a 2048x1536 pixels display, though it converts to the same 264 ppi as the larger model. Apple has also improved the colour gamut and is using adaptive contrast technology which it calls the TrueTone display.
The iPad Pro 9.7-inch is likely to be launched in India alongside the iPhone SE on April 8 for a starting price of Rs.49,900.
